Hey y’all! My name is Cameron and I’m part of the Portland State University Student Action Coalition. StAC is a debt-resistance group working at Portland State to our university more just, open, affordable, accessible, and democratic. This year, we are building a student union on campus in order to unite students to leverage our collective power against an administration apathetic and often even hostile toward the notion of substantive student oversight and shared governance, generally hellbent on implementing a model of austerity and privatization all the while paying themselves lucrative six-figure salaries. We believe this is the wrong course for the largest public university in the state, and that a more informed and active student body in the first step to fighting back. The Portland State University Student Union (PSUSU - www.psusu.org) is a union of PSU students founded on the principles of equality, horizontality, and direct democracy. For PSUSU, direct democracy means students ourselves as the main actors in our struggle for a better university. We will utilize our own resources and capabilities to secure the university we need and deserve, discovering in the process what these are, and how much we can accomplish. We work in coalition with faculty and workers on campus as well as student government and a number of environmental, cultural, and social justice student groups. As of the writing of this biographical blurb, PSUSU has over 800 members and we’re laying some exciting plans for Winter term.
I'm 22, a senior and an English major. I grew up in the Portland area and have no plans to leave any time soon. After graduation, I look forward to continuing to contribute to the rapidly growing US student movement in any way I can and pursuing a career in the trouble-making industry.
